Common Questions & Answers

If you considering investing in an automatic sprinkler system you probably have many questions. The page that follows has been designed to answer many of the questions you may have.

Will an automatic sprinkler system use more water than I am currently using?

No. In reality, an automatic sprinkler system will actually save you water. A well designed, irrigation system applies exactly the amount of water needed by your landscape. You will never again have to worry about wasting water if you forget to turn off the hose. Plus, with a rain sensor your system will know when it is raining and simply turn itself off when water is not needed.

Will an automatic sprinkler system really save me time?

Absolutely! You won't have to spend another minute of your leisure time watering the lawn. Your new sprinkler system will do all the watering for you, even when you are not home!

Will an automatic sprinkler system water as effectively as watering by hand?

Absolutely! Your automatic sprinkler system is specifically designed for the needs of your yard so your sprinkler system will actually do a more efficient job than watering by hand.

What are the components of an automatic sprinklers system?

A typical sprinkler system is made up of a controller, valves (which open and close to release and stop the flow of water to underground pipes) and sprinklers (which distribute water to specific areas). Your sprinkler system can be customized further with rain shut off devices, soil moisture sensors and drip irrigation zones.

Do Automatic Lawn Sprinkler Systems Waste Water?

NO. In fact, your automatic sprinkler system will actually conserve water. Did you know over 30% of water can be lost to evaporation when hand watering? Where as a professionally designed sprinkler system conserves water by applying a precise amount, at exact times. Your lawn is efficiently watered before you awake, precisely timed not to over-water and will not forget to shut off the garden hose.

What is a backflow preventer?

A backflow preventer is a device that prevents outdoor water that can be contaminated by landscape fertilizers and pesticide chemicals from siphoning back into your home water supply.

My sprinkler system won't run. What could be wrong?

First, check the controller to make sure that is working properly. Some clocks have a battery back up, so it may appear that the controller is on. If a controller is working on battery back up it will not activate the system. Plug a hair dryer or similar appliance to check the power to the outlet. Also, if it has rained recently, check the Rain Sensor override. A second thing to check is to make sure the water supply to the irrigation system has not been shut down at any point. Check the main shut off valve in the basement and at the back flow point there is usually a valve or two that can be closed and stop water flow to the irrigation lines.

My sprinkler system won't shut off. What do I do?

First, check the clock program to make sure it hasn't been changed. Next turn the clock off using the dial (don't unplug the clock; it may loose its program). If the system won't shut off from the clock, you will need to shut the water supply to the whole system off. For some reason the valve will not shut down allowing constant water flow to the zone.
